Uneven Lies (up and downhill shots)

If you have an downhill lie, your shot will leak to the right (for a right hander).  The opposite is true for an uphill lie. A proper setup adjustment will help adapt your swing to compensate.

Uphill Lie...

Possible Errors - pulling, under-clubbing, and chunking the ball

To correct this (assuming a right handed golfer):

1. Stand as perpendicular to the ground as possible with more focus of weight to the left side.

2. Take a stronger club to be sure you reach the target.

3. Position the ball near the center of your stance since the weight

    transfer will be minimized.

4. Choke down on the club for better control.

5. Aim a bit right of the target to allow for the pull.

6. Take a few practice swings until you feel comfortable with the adjustments.

Downhill Lie (the most difficult of the "Uneven Lies")...

Possible Errors - pushing, slicing, and thinning the ball

To correct this:

1. Stand as perpendicular as possible and resist being pulled down the

    hill PAST the ball.

2. Play the ball slightly back of the middle of your stance.

3. Tilt the shoulders as much as possible with the slope of the ground

to make it easier to stay with the shot.

4. Allow for the club to be somewhat delofted which will cause the ball to

go lower, hotter, and roll farther.  A three quarter swing will cause the

ball to travel the same distance as a full swing on an even lie.

5. Aim to the left an amount to compensate with the slope.

6. Take a few practice swings until you feel comfortable with the adjustments.
